We can trace the birth of our modern pedestal desks back to the Georgian Era. During the 17th Century a desk was usually no more than a simple sloped writing box on legs, As the 18th Century progressed and writing became a very fashionable pastime, so the humble desk soon became an object of intricate beauty. The finest makers such as Thomas Chippendale sported designs of grand desks within their design books incorporating flame Mahogany, marble and ebonised details. Cast brass handles and knobs finished off the look. Davenports, Knee-hole Desks and ladies Writing Desks emerged at the same time. As an overt status symbol such desks were always designed to impress. At the same time far more practical clerks desks were also being created for workers and those on lower incomes. Made from Oak, Pine or Walnut these country pieces were made to withstand daily use and often had plenty of small drawers for storing items.
For those looking to purchase a Georgian desk then their superior quality has meant many still exist to choose from. These were highly practical items which a great deal of effort went into constructing. As you sit at it remind yourself of the original owners who worked merely by candlelight and the sun to pen notes of thanks to friends and add up the day’s business takings. If you are a lover of history, then these desks have so many tales they could tell.
At LoveAntiques we have a great selection of quality Antique Georgian Desks for sale as well as Vintage pieces which celebrate the style.
