Description
This is a scarce WW2 era armband for the Soldiers, Sailors & Airmen Families Association.
Featuring the entwined letter A’s for Queen Alexandra (the first president of the association), along with the King’s crown, and the S.S.&.A.F.A. acronym across the top.
The base fabric is a dark navy blue colour, manufactured in a felt / wool, which is hemmed to the edges and joined to the back for wear.
The organisation had started life as the Soldiers & Sailors Families Association, but the formation of the Royal Air Force towards the end of WW1 added ‘Airmen’ to their title.
The organisation is a charity that still operates today, with their aim to be able to support men and women serving in the armed forces, and their families and dependents, and veterans.
I’m not certain of the exact purpose of the armband, but it’s perhaps likely that it was worn by the volunteers during fund raising, or for when on duty helping families bombed out of their homes during the blitz .
Regardless of its exact purpose, it’s a scarce piece of home front memorabilia from WW2.
There are no holes or tears, just a little storage creasing which can be ironed out if desired.
All in all, a good clean example.
measurements
The armband measure approximately 19.5cm x 10.2cm
