Description
TITLE Original Ralston Gudgeon RSW (1910–1984) Scottish Watercolour of a Redwing Bird in Flight DESCRIPTION An original mid-20th century watercolour by the distinguished Scottish wildlife artist Ralston Gudgeon RSW (1910–1984), depicting a redwing in flight as it prepares to settle on a branch. Beautifully executed with delicate washes and confident brushwork, this charming ornithological study captures both the grace and character of one of Britain's best-loved winter visitors. Presented beneath glass in its original gilt wooden frame, the painting offers an elegant display and would complement both traditional and contemporary interiors. ABOUT THE ARTIST Ralston Gudgeon RSW was one of Scotland's most respected wildlife painters, renowned for his finely observed studies of birds and animals. Educated at the Glasgow School of Art, he received the Torrance Memorial Award from the Glasgow Institute in 1933 and, in 1936, became the youngest artist elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW). His works are held in important public collections including Glasgow Museums, Paisley Art Gallery and the City of Edinburgh Collection, and remain highly sought after by collectors of Scottish art and British wildlife painting. THE SUBJECT The painting depicts a redwing (Turdus iliacus), Britain's smallest true thrush and a familiar winter visitor from Scandinavia and Iceland. The bird's distinctive cream eyebrow stripe and warm russet flanks are captured with remarkable accuracy, reflecting Gudgeon's exceptional knowledge of wildlife and natural history. FRAME The painting is housed in its original gilt wooden frame beneath protective glass and is ready to hang.
