Description
A set of 9 antique Vanity Fair “Statesmen” framed prints mounted and glazed in glossy black frames, these antique prints are a good collection to bring a little satirical humour to your wall. Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in Britain from 1868 to 1914 and offered a satirical take on Victorian society, publishing articles on fashion, current events and the latest scandals. A full-page color lithograph caricature of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. The primary artists were Carlo Pellegrini “Ape” and Leslie Ward “Spy”, and it is because of the latter artist as to why these prints are often collectively referred to as “Spy Prints”. This set of 9 includes: “Statesmen No.35”, A caricature portrait of The Earl of Shaftesbury originally published on November 13th 1869 in Vanity Fair. By artist Carlo Pellegrini “Ape”. “Statesmen No.4”, A caricature portrait of The Right Honourable Robert Lowe. Originally published in Vanity Fair February 27 1869.
