Description
Silvio Apponyi (German-Australian, b. 1949)
Patinated Bronze Sculpture of Two Stingrays
Signed and stamped; cast by the artist in Australia
Circa late 20th century / early 21st century
Bronze with applied green patination
This finely modelled bronze by Silvio Apponyi presents a pair of intertwined stingrays in a compact, low-profile sculptural group, rendered with the characteristic sensitivity to form and movement that defines the artist’s wildlife oeuvre. Worked in solid bronze and finished with a nuanced green patina enriched by exposed highlights to the edges and ridges, the piece demonstrates Apponyi’s technical command of lost-wax casting and surface finishing. The sculpture displays two rays positioned in close relation: one forming the primary mass and the second subtly sheltered beneath its wing, giving the ensemble a sense of quiet motion and natural hierarchy.
The underside carries Apponyi’s incised signature and his foundry/artist stamps, together with the edition number 13/50. The modelling exhibits the softly graduated plane transitions, compressed volumes and understated anatomical accuracy that have made Apponyi one of Australia’s leading wildlife sculptors. His bronzes are held in a number of public, corporate and private collections, and he is well known for his large-scale commissions across Australia, including significant works for the Australian National Botanic Gardens and numerous regional galleries.
Born in Germany in 1949 and emigrating to Australia as a child, Apponyi trained initially as a woodcarver before developing a multi-disciplinary sculptural practice encompassing wood, stone and bronze. His wildlife subjects—particularly Australian fauna—are celebrated for their combination of naturalistic fidelity and sculptural economy. Smaller bronzes such as the present work are particularly sought after by collectors due to their limited production, high tactile quality and expressive patina.
This example is an appealing and intimate study of marine life, demonstrating the artist’s refined understanding of movement, contour and the inherent expressiveness of bronze. The subtle asymmetry and overlapping forms confer a sense of gentle glide, making the work suitable as both a standalone collector’s piece and as part of a broader collection of Australian or contemporary wildlife sculpture.
