Title: The Waverley Novels - complete set of 25 volumes. Author: Sir Walter Scott Publication: Edinburgh : Adam & Charles Black, 1871, The Centenary Edition A very good set of the Centenary Edition of the Waverley novels, published on the 100 anniversary of Scott's birth. This set, unusually, has 133 (as we have counted) fine engraved plates throughout, in addition to the engraved frontispiece to each volume and wood engraved title page vignettes and other small textual decoration which are standard. The plates are drawn and engraved by various hands: a large number are after Charles Stansfield R.A. and of most plates are very evocative views of the Romantic landscapes which feed Scott's novels. The binding is green three quarters calf with marbled boards, edges and endpapers, gilt tooled spines and red title pieces. The number of plates (in addition to the frontispiece) in each volume varies from 3 to 8, the usual number being 5 or 6.

condition

Condition overall is very good. The bindings are sound and the pages very clean. There is some light wear to the bindings with corners a little rubbed and bumped, spines are a little faded, especially some of the title pieces, and there is slight wear to the head of the spines on about a third of the volumes. Board edges have some typical shelf wear and there is slight offsetting of the frontispiece to the title page in a few volumes, including volume 1, which also have a minor water stain to the title page/frontispiece. The worst condition issue is Volume 2, Guy Mannering, which has been chewed by a dog, resulting in damage to a number of pages including loss to text on pages 209-232, where the dog clearly won - however the binding is still fine and the plates unaffected.
