Description
Born in 1695 John Calver of Woodbridge Probably one of his Early Longcases, This Small 77.5in Longcase or Grandmother Clock with Robust Rope Single Hand 30 Hour Movement that has been Checked, Serviced & Tested to be in Good Working Order. The Ebonised Finish is Typical of the Finish Added to Longcase Clocks During Queen Victoria's Mourning with the Death of her Husband, Albert. Though it may well have had a finish from it's Origins. I have enjoyed a number of John Calver Clocks. All have been Well Constructed. I Currently have a Beautiful Chinoiserie Cased Clock by John Calver - SA1156736. One of my Previous John Calver Longcase Clocks has been Incorporated in to A Modern Art Sculpture - The Trunk is now Knotted!!!! Oh Well. Biography John Calver, born 1695, died 1751, is described as 'one of Suffolk's best makers of his period'. He married Mary Trott in October 1738, who died in 1750 having borne no children. Calver's will was proven in April 1751 in which a bequest was made that his former apprentice William Mahyew be allowed to purchase the shop and premises in Stone Street, Woodbridge (now Church Street) for £105 as long as stock was also purchased at cost. A number of clocks are known signed for Calver including a green lacquered longcase example with a rare 'Equation of Time' sheet set within the inside of the trunk door. Reference Arthur L. Hagger & Leonard F. Miller Suffolk Clocks & Clockmakers Pub. Authors 1974. Please contact Robert on Messaging or Via 07899 058752 to Discuss.
