Description
This is a box that was made to last for a great many generations. The box and the tray is constructed entirely of solid oak and features the ‘rays’ associate with the cut of the wood that give rise to the appropriate name that the cut is referred to in the USA……’Tiger Oak’. Superbly cut dovetailed joints are a feature of the carcass and tray and obviously provide nigh on maximum strength. The box has not been stripped back and refinished and given the condition I would suggest that this box has had very little use. No shrinkage splits. No missing or replaced wood. The lid closes perfectly square. Original brass hinges and lock with unspoilt patina. What is believed to be the original working key. Removable tray with additional storage space beneath. The tray features 19 sections all with the original dividers. All dividers and all interior surfaces are in what is best described as unused condition. There is a one piece triple spool to the rear section turned from a solid piece of wood, again in superb condition. It cannot be stated to total confidence that it is original to the box but I would suggest, given the fit that it is. I do wonder if the 5 lids with matching knobs and velvet covering are original, there is more than a fair chance that they are solid oak but best not disturbed given the perfect fit and fine condition of the velvet. Oak tended not to be in favour in terms of box manufacture during the 1800’s in part due to the practicality of inlaying though the military and medical professions had the good sense to continue to use the timber to protect equipment and instruments. The wood gained popularity during the latter part of the century and throughout much of the following century where it was used frequently during the art/design period and was once again appreciated for strength and durability. This box would make an ideal jewellery box or could be put to good use for the original intended purpose. Whatever the intended purpose it should be good for practical use for a good many generations to come. Unpacked weight 2.6Kg
