Description
A splendid late Victorian fusee wall clock with 12” dial, by maker Arthur Evershed of 18 Victoria Street, Brighton, Sussex.
Born in the USA, 1834, Evershed moved to Hove, Sussex as a young child with his family, (his father was a US diplomat based in London). Evershed served his apprenticeship in Brighton under Henry Legg, after which he decided to remain in Brighton and Hove for the rest of his life. (His parents returning to the US sometime c1855).
• Turned Mahogany roundhead face and boxed cabinet has good, aged patination.
• Hinged inspection door located to the side of the box.
• Turn-catch regulator door located at the bottom of the box.
• Metal dial has black Roman numerals with Evershed’s details.
• Original pair of blued spade hands, secured with a pinned collet.
• Dial protected by glaze mounted in its original brass bezel.
• Quality 8-day single fusee movement set between rectangular plates and turned pillars.
• Comes with its original 75mm diameter pendulum bob and brass winding key.
During his life, Evershed married twice and also commenced watchmaking in c1870, once his clockmaking activities had become well-established in the south-eastern counties of England.
It is not known when Evershed passed away, yet it is known that he was still listed as an active watch and clockmaker on the 1901 census, aged 77, and was living with his second wife in Westbourne Street (now Gardens), an affluent residential area of Hove!
