Description
Offered for sale is a mid/late 19th century Staffordshire flatback mantle figure of the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin astride his trusty mare Black Bess.
Turpin was the scurge of travellers between 1705 and 1739. Despite being a horse thief, poacher, burglar, and murderer, Turpin’s legacy was romanticised after his capture and execution. This included a story of a 200-mile overnight ride from London to York on his horse, Black Bess, that was made up one hundred years after his death by a Victorian novelist.
