Description
A fine oil on canvas still life of flowers by Vincent Clare 1855-1917. The work beautifully depicts roses and blossom by a mossy bank which is typical for the artist. The piece is signed in full to the lower right. Vincent Clare was a painter of fruit and flower subjects and a member of the famous Clare family of still life painters. He was born 1855 in Birmingham. He was the son of George Clare and brother of Oliver Clare. He lived for most of his life in Southgate, London, although he was known to have exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool between 1888 and 1897. Of all the still life subjects Clare painted, his flower compositions are recognized as his strong point. Clare died in London in 1925. This example does retain on the reverse Clare’s address in Southgate, London and dates the work to 1897.
The painting is in very good untouched condition and retains the original gilt frame in equally good untouched condition. The whole is a lovely example of still life painting of this later Victorian period.
