Description
A gorgeous Spode bone china porcelain spill vase in an unusually understated style with the majority of the pure white ground undecorated, a testament to the quality and whiteness of the porcelain that it could be left so exposed as the star of the show (not many of Spode's competitors could have achieved such a result). A convex moulded band part way up is exceptionally well painted with a running border of forget-me-nots and ruffled white roses. Beaded bands around the rim and foot of small white porcelain pearls set against a gilt background. The careful, deliberate simplicity is very beautiful and the symbolism of the flowers is clearly significant. Marked to the underside, hidden in the well in the centre, with "SPODE" in red script. c.1815. This shape is number 44 in the factory shape book, named beaded, vase shaped jar.
