Stunning Rare George Jones Majolica Pink Fox Tray Model 2272 c.1869

A superb and rare George Jones heavy majolica dished tray featuring a fabulous fox creeping out of the foot rim and over the edge and with his tail wrapped around the foot of the dish and curling up over the rim on the other side. The centre has moulded overlapping vine leaves. The tray surface is enamelled with a pale pink ground and finished with an ochre rim. Lovely, very finely modelled detail to the fox facial features, paws and texture of the fur. A striking, fun piece, deserving of a prime display position as well as being enjoyed in use and entertainment. Marked to the back with black painted model number 2272 over 1 in unglazed thumbprint and diamond registration stamp. This design was registered in 1869, and the lozenge mark shows date letter H for this date also. Reference: George Jones Ceramics 1861-1951, Cluett, plate 38 for another example.
