Superb Doulton Lambeth Oil Lamp by Mark V Marshall, 1881

This wonderful lamp is the work of Mark V Marshall, one of the most versatile and imaginative artists to work at the Doulton Lambeth factory, where he stayed for over 30 years. He is known particularly for his "grotesque" modelling (he assisted the Martin Brothers for a time), although this is by no means his only area of skill. On this lamp the base features a curious grotesque Wild Man's head. and of the font centaur-like lion-men, and well as birds. The shape of the lamp is one used by Marshall on a number of occasions, and possibly he had a hand in the overall design. An example of another vase by him of the same shape is pictured on page 250 of The Doulton Lambeth Wares, by Desmond Eyles (2002). The collar and burner are original, the collar stamped Hinks & Sons Patent and the burner with winders marked Hinks Duplex Patent. Both font and ceramic base are very well marked. The font has the initials M.V.M and the Doulton Lambeth impressed mark with the date 1881, together with a large P and 76, a large D and the initials MA (probably the assistant artist Mary Aitken). The base has the same marks on the inside without the Doulton stamp and with 75 instead of 76. Please note the the shade is not included with the lamp, but we can supply a chimney if required. The lamp could be used despite the faults, and is priced to reflect them.
41 cm to top of burner (excluding shade and chimney)
Chester's Farm Antiques has clarified that the Superb Doulton Lambeth Oil Lamp by Mark V Marshall, 1881 (LA352919) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1881
At some point someone converted this lamp to electricity, smashing the font in the process. The font has now bee re-glued and it virtually all complete, with repairs touched in, so that they are not invisible, but the lamp displays well. The brass frame is also lacking one of the turned securing nuts, but this is not need for the lamp to hold together. The burner is in working order but does have a hole in the fretwork. Other than these things, the lamp is in very good condition, the brass with even patina.
