Description
Swedish Woodland Church Painting by John R Davies1 This is a interesting painting believed to be by the English artist John R Davies, who lived from 1899 to 1985. His works were exhibited variously from what I can find and some of his paintings have been sold at auction including at Bonhams. In this particular painting, we see churchgoers entering a place of worship in Skutskar, Sweden. The scene is enveloped in a forested ambiance, with charming earthy colours contrasting against the white-painted church. The circular window, almost reflecting the cross below, adds a unique touch. The muted colours of the churchgoers’ clothing and the blue/grey tones create an interesting composition. The trees on the left show a mix of bare branches and leaves, suggesting a springtime setting. Despite still wearing their coats, the churchgoers seem eager to enter the serene space. The blend of natural elements and spiritual symbolism makes this artwork a captivating addition to any collection. Signed top left. John R. Davies’s is sadly no longer with us but his artistic legacy endures, capturing moments and landscapes immortalised on canvas with his distinctive style. John R. Davies (1899–1985) was a British painter and draughtsman. Born in Wolverhampton he attended evening classes at the Manchester School of Art after leaving school at the age of 14. His artistic journey continued as he served in the Lancashire Fusiliers from 1917. Under the tutelage of Adolphe Valette, he studied full-time at the Manchester School of Art. Additionally, Davies honed his skills at the studio of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (Mafa), where he became a member. Davies was also affiliated with the Stockport Art Guild, eventually serving as its president in 1959. His artistic contributions extended to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (Ri). Upon retiring, he became a member of the Haslemere Art Society and was a founding member of the Art Society in Midhurst, Sussex, where he resided. His work graced the Royal Academy (RA) exhibitions, and he held several solo shows in Buxton and Manchester. Notably, the Tib Lane Gallery exhibited a selection of his work in 1994.
