Description
Size: Frame 45.5 x 55.5 cm, print inside mount 27 x 37 cm. Condition: Print in excellent condition, colours fresh and unfaded, new mount and good used frame. The official title of this print, in the printer's blindstamp on the mount, is The Day Before Marriage. It was published in 1854 and is after a painting by Fanny Corbaux. The young woman, in a blue dress with blue velvet jacket, holds a letter in her hand, but her expression is enigmatic. There is another Baxter print often paired with this one, entitled The Lover's Letter Box, published 1856 and after a painting by Jessie McLeod, which shows a similar young girl posting a letter in the hollow of a tree. However, this print was published two years earlier. Possibly Baxter saw the possiblity of matching the stories of two unrelated paintings. The print is a colour print made using George Baxter's patented method, which was a forerunner of the modern colour print. Sometimes this type of print is referred to as an oil print, and with its strong block of colour it is particularly good at reproducing oil paintings. The process involved a master steel engraving and then a number of Zinc colour blocks. It was highly complex and enormously popular. Baxter's prints have come to epitomise our view of Victorian taste in pictures. The publisher's imprint is bottom left in the print. The George Baxter blindstamp is on the card mount (below the frame mount). Marie Françoise Catherine Doetger "Fanny" Corbaux (1812–1883) was a British painter and biblical commentator. She exhibited 86 works at the Royal Academy between 1829 and 1854. As far as we know this painting only exists in the form of this print.
