Description
Please see my stock page for one of the largest selection of writing boxes available on this website. Fine quality rosewood triple fold writing box in very fine condition. Made during the late Georgian – Regency period. Rosewood veneer on a solid mahogany carcass. Attractive grain to all aspects. No missing or replaced veneer. No shrinkage splits. Original inlaid brass corners, side handles, escutcheon and cartouche. All sections close perfectly square. The lid opens to reveal an impressive interior. Please note the quality of the gilt tooling on the leather to the top writing surface and the panel to the lid interior….all in very good condition. The panel drops forward by releasing the original swing clasp to provide access to a large document envelope to the back of the panel. The envelope is in excellent condition with both side folds fully intact and ‘blind’ embossed leather back. Eight (rather than the more usual 6 or 7) small note/card retainers, 7 clearly embossed with gilt lettering with the days of the week. The office section comprises of the standard layout of twin pot sections, small sloping section and black dished pen tray with storage space beneath. The two pots are certainly Georgian with silver plated tops and hand blown bases free of chips and fractures. Both bases have the wavy glass effect that is associated with such items of the period. One pot is for ink, the other is a pounce pot. Which if any of the two are original is impossible to state. The front section folds forward to provide a large sloping writing surface with velvet covering in excellent condition. Please note that rather than have a single piece of velvet extending across the central fold lines there are two separate pieces. This is certainly an original feature and it is a great pity that the feature was not adopted on all writing boxes as it prevents damage along the central line that is the single most common cause of loss/damage to writing boxes. Both sections are attached to the box carcass by inset leather tabs… a common practice during the period. Both sections have storage areas beneath. The uppermost section features a lock. The escutcheon is I believe a replacement and is the only piece of brassware throughout the box that is believed to be a replacement. A replacement working key is supplied for the exterior lock but key for decorative purposes only for the interior lock. All brassware is in extremely fine condition. The box features twin secret drawers of solid mahogany construction with the original finely turned knobs. Superb tiny hand cut dovetails joints that reflect the skills of the box makers of the period. Access to the secret drawers is slightly different from the norm insofar that the Back corner of the left pot section is pressed down (will be clearly indicated inside with tape). The original concealing panel springs out exactly as it should. I confess to being baffled by the pair of hinges on the main lid. Please note there are no screw fixings in evidence!!! Though I have come across concealed hinges on boxes I have never come across the likes of these. Certainly the hinges hold the lid rock solid, certainly the patina on the brass is unspoilt, certainly the appearance of the hinge fold as seen from the back of the box suggest that they are antique. It does not appear that the hinges are recessed, screw fixed and then topped with separate brass ‘plates’. It is almost as if the hinges had double plates one of which was drilled for screws and the top plates folded down? Given the solid fit and condition I do not feel comfortable re’ exploring further. One excellent example of a triple fold box in a condition to please. Highly Recommended.
