Description
It is not often that boxes like this surface. Made during the early 1800’s this item would have no doubt belonged to quite a well to do gentleman. The box is constructed of solid mahogany. No shrinkage splits. The carcass is rock solid and has stood the passing of time extremely well. Inset brass corner pieces, side handles, cartouche and escutcheon, all original and complete, all bar the escutcheon firmly fixed with the original screw fixings. The lid closes perfectly square on the original hinges. Original lock with what is possibly the original working key. The lid interior features the original leather panel that folds forward by releasing the original silver swing clasp to provide access to a storage area for documents. No tears to the leather with just minor stains where the panel has been in contact with the tops of containers in the base section. The base section is superb. 7 containers all in very good condition with no fractures to any of the glass. The 2 glass stoppers to the containers at the rear are VERY slightly different but otherwise all are as they should be. There are two original removable mahogany boxes with sliding tops, both in excellent condition and well made with tiny dovetailed joints. The two back sections to the left sit on a removable tray with two foil lined storage sections beneath. The front shaving soap dish sits in an area with foil lining with a removable base, again with a concealed foil lined storage section beneath. The centre tray has the original leather lining to the base and the original turned knobs. The tray can be removed to access yet another divided storage section, again foil lined. The entire central section included the two small jars at the back is another removable tray with a further storage section beneath. Nigh on all of the foil lining throughout is original and is in incredible condition even more so when you consider that it is circa 200 years old!! The various containers and accessories are later additions but whoever sourced them must have spent a considerable amount of time doing so, for those of you out there that have tried doing so you will know only too well how difficult it can be to source containers that fit Georgian boxes in particular. It is only upon close examination of Georgian boxes that the skills of the makers can be appreciated. Small details like the precise nature of the tiny hand cut dovetail joints and the hand made trays and boxes that can be turned around and still fit in the recesses perfectly, external brassware firmly fixed with screws rather than with thin tapered ‘pins’. The Georgians made boxes to last and the items were made with pride in workmanship……As this box proves. It is a great pity that some of the practices were not adopted during the Victorian era…..more boxes would have stood the test of time. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Unpacked weight 4Kg
