I like to try to offer some ‘different’ boxes on quite a regular bases and this item is certainly that. Constructed throughout of solid figured oak (referred to more appropriately as ‘Tiger Oak’ in the Usa). Of very sturdy construction. No missing or replaced wood, no splits. Original brass hinges and lock with a replacement working key supplied. Upon unlocking the lid lifts and the front drops forward fully to reveal a fully fitted interior. Original divided lid interior with original swing clasp that retains two original boards with all ‘flips’ in perfect condition. The base section comprises of 8 sections with two central removable drawers, once again constructed entirely of solid figured oak with the original solid brass knobs. The top section accommodates the original scoring marker boards with gilt details embossed in leather to the front and scoring details of the game to the backs. Both are in excellent condition. The central drawers accommodate a set of poker dice and 5 other dice of varying sizes, approximately 50 red and white round counters of different sizes, a small propelling pencil and a small book ‘presented by Dun & Co’ of tricks with sticks. I understand that the game of Bezique originated in France during the 1700’s and is still quite actively played, Winston Churchill was known to be keen on the game. It is played using only 7-King + the ace of the four card suits which explains why 3 of the 6 decks of cards in the storage areas comprise only of those cards. There are two full decks of cards still sealed (modern). The other full deck looks to be quite old….the ace of spades making reference to Goodhall Son Limd London. The numbers on the card corners seem to be smaller than modern day cards. The other 3 decks comprise of 2 decks again made by Goodhalls and the third set by DeLarue London with the ace of spades reading ‘ Duty Three Pence When used in Great Britain and Ireland’. All 3 decks are void of any numbers etc to the corners of the cards. All cards are in very good condition and complete. How old the cards are I have no idea but I am certain with a little research it could be established. Equally, to what degree the contents of the box bar the lid contents and the leather Bezique markers/scorers are original to the box is anyone’s guess. One thing is certain, this is a charming item, of very sound construction, built to last many more generations and would be a joy to use.
