Unusual Olive Wood Writing Box. C1880

Please see my stock page for one of the largest selection of writing boxes available on this website. Unusual, large slope fronted olive wood writing box in very good condition. Given the condition the odds are that this item has had very little use. No shrinkage splits. Original hinges and lock with possibly the original ornate working key. Attractive grain….. Quite a few people have noticed what looks to be a face on the top of the sloping front!! The office section comprises of seven sections and there is no evidence of any lids ever having been present. One section features quite an unusual sprung top round inkpot that has been used as the original glass inside is held secure by dried ink….with a bit of a soak it should be freed. Generous storage space beneath the top half of the writing platform which features what I believe to be the original velvet surface. The velvet is of course split along the fold line of the two box sections but it is fully intact along the fold line where the slope is opened to access the storage area. Given the lack of extensive light bleaching along one of the fold lines I would suggest that this box has been stored away from any natural light for many a year. The clean condition throughout the box supports that suggestion. Please note the double hinged hinges that support the wring platform…….Possibly suggesting that the box is of French origin? The dib nib pen, spare nibs and the other ‘bits’ are later additions. A decent clean and unusual box in terms of style and features and not that often that olive wood writing boxes surface.
