Victorian Burr Walnut Unisex Jewellery Box + Front Drawer c.1860

Mid 1800’s burr walnut jewellery box of generous proportions equally suitable for use by a lady or gentleman. Unspoilt patina with attractive grain. Solid mahogany carcass. No missing or replaced veneer. Original inlaid brass. Lid closes perfectly square on the original brass stop hinges. The lock is in very good condition and comes complete with a replacement working key. Front drawer accessed by removing a brass locking rod located to the right of the lock inside the box there all contents can be made secure. The drawer is constructed with solid mahogany with hand cut dovetail joints. The lid interior features the original leather covered panel and lining. The base section features an open storage to the front with three lidded sections to the back with matching solid brass ring pulls. The lids are replacements and are covered with leather to complement the lid interior. I believe that the box was originally either a homeopathic or apothecary box the clues being the style of both the exterior and interior and in particular the brass screws in evidence to the top of the lid, intended to be a feature and one that features on the vast majority of antique medical related boxes and very often military boxes. One fine looking box that would suit both modern and traditional settings and of course very practical for modern day use.
