Description
The Last Shot in the Soudan. Illustrated London News (ILN), 1885 An original antique chromolithograph First Anglo-Sudan War After R. Caton Woodville Published by Leighton Brothers, Drury Lane, London Late 19th Century A dramatic and historically significant Victorian military print titled The Last Shot in the Soudan, after the celebrated war artist R. Caton Woodville, depicting a climactic scene from the First Anglo-Sudan War. The composition captures the intensity and movement of late-19th-century colonial warfare, with British and allied troops advancing across a desert landscape. Woodville was one of the most prominent war artists of the period, closely associated with the Illustrated London News (ILN), whose correspondent-artists provided the British public with some of the earliest visual reporting of contemporary conflicts. During the Victorian era, the ILN dominated illustrated journalism, producing high-quality engravings and lithographs at a time when photography was not yet widely viable for mass publication. Dramatic military scenes such as this were often issued as special supplements or standalone prints, intended for framing and display, reflecting the public’s fascination with imperial campaigns and current affairs. This example was published by Leighton Brothers of Drury Lane, a respected London firm known for producing finely printed historical and military works. The print retains strong colour and detail and is presented in a traditional wooden frame with a mounted border, displaying well as a decorative and historical piece. Details: • Title: The Last Shot in the Soudan • After: R. Caton Woodville • Subject: First Anglo-Sudan War • Publisher: Leighton Brothers, Drury Lane, London • Medium: Colour lithographic print • Date: Late 19th century • Framed and glazed Condition: Age-related wear consistent with a Victorian print, including light toning and minor surface marks. The frame shows wear commensurate with age. Overall a well-presented and atmospheric example.
