This is a Victorian French (Normandy), mould-blown, engraved glass cider or wine jug dating from the middle of the 19th century, c1850. The jug is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 170 years of use. It has a T-shaped gadget mark on the bottom of the foot. The jug is of baluster form in the clear colourway and measures 7.8 cm (3.1 inches) by 6 cm (2.4 inches) at the pouring rim which is folded over to strengthen it from chipping. The jug has two applied neck rings and measures 9 cm (3.6 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The jug is 15.5 cm (6.2 inches) in height and has a looped, hollow applied handle affixed first to the top of the jug and ending at the widest point of the jug with a turned-up curlicue. The body of the jug is engraved with foliage. It ends in a small, plain conical foot that measures 7.3 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. It weighs 370 g. (~ 13 oz.).
