VICTORIAN HIATT “DARBY” WROUGHT IRON POLICE HANDCUFFS & KEY

A highly collectable pair of late 19th-century British wrought iron police handcuffs by Hiatt & Company of Birmingham, made in the traditional “Darby” pattern and retaining their original-style screw key. The cuffs are formed with substantial D-shaped wrought iron wrist restraints, hinged locking bars and cylindrical screw-lock mechanisms. They are joined by a short length of individually forged iron chain, including a substantial central connecting link. Each cuff is opened and secured using the distinctive removable screw key. This comparatively slow but dependable locking system is characteristic of the Darby pattern, which became one of the most recognisable forms of Victorian British police restraint. The handcuffs display an appealing dark, naturally aged surface with visible hand-forging marks, minor oxidation and wear consistent with many years of service and storage. The surviving key is a particularly desirable feature, as many antique examples are now encountered without one. The key mechanism is fully working.
