Description
Victorian Military Portrait of Ensign Conway Richard Dobbs Reeves, 58th Regiment of Foot, Oil on Canvas, Circa 1860 A fine and historically interesting Victorian military portrait depicting a young British Army officer, believed to be Ensign Conway Richard Dobbs Reeves (1840–1860) of the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot. Dating to circa 1859–1860, this attractive oil on canvas portrait shows the young officer half-length, dressed in the distinctive scarlet tunic of the Victorian British Army with brass buttons, dark regimental facings and a crimson officer's sash. The sitter's youthful appearance, direct gaze and composed expression create a highly engaging portrait with considerable decorative appeal. Executed by a capable British School artist of the mid-19th century, the work demonstrates confident handling and strong colour, with the vivid scarlet uniform standing out against the darker background. The portrait remains an excellent example of Victorian military portraiture from the height of the British Empire. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription reading: "Conway Reeves – Died Aged 19 – Best Looking Man in British Army." Research suggests the sitter is probably Conway Richard Dobbs Reeves of County Cork, Ireland, who served as an Ensign in the 58th Regiment of Foot and died aged only nineteen on 31 January 1860. Military records, genealogical evidence and burial records provide strong supporting evidence for this attribution, although it remains catalogued as probable rather than definitive. Particularly appealing is the poignant story associated with the painting. If the identification is correct, this portrait was likely painted during the final year of the young officer's life, preserving the image of a promising British Army officer whose career was tragically cut short. The 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot was a distinguished British line infantry regiment with a proud military history, later becoming part of the Northamptonshire Regiment following the Childers Reforms of 1881. The painting is presented in a later gilt frame and is ready for display. The reverse also retains a trade label for C. H. Campbell, Picture Framer of Bembridge, Isle of Wight, recording part of the work's later history. An excellent acquisition for collectors of military antiques, British Army memorabilia, Victorian portraiture, regimental history and 19th-century oil paintings. Provenance: Private collection. Later handwritten inscription identifying the sitter as Conway Reeves. Probable identification as Conway Richard Dobbs Reeves (1840–1860), Ensign, 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot. Later framer's label for C. H. Campbell, High Street, Bembridge, Isle of Wight. Collection of Cheshire Antiques Consultant Ltd: A rare opportunity to acquire a Victorian military portrait with probable identification to a documented British Army officer, combining strong decorative appeal with genuine historical interest and research-backed provenance.
