Victorian Quality Burr Walnut Table Box c.1870

Fine quality burr walnut table box in very fine condition. Retailer’s plaque inlaid to the box interior that reads ‘R. Rodrigues. 42 Piccadilly’. The retailer was known to have occupied the premises from c1851-c1900 and enjoyed a reputation for the sale of high quality items seemingly tending to specialise in boxes and clocks. As with most retailers located in the Piccadilly area of London the outlet tended to cater for the higher end of the market. Please note the quality of the walnut veneer to All aspects of the box exterior and the coromandel veneer to the carcass edges to the box interior. All veneer is original, complete, possesses an unspoilt patina and is in excellent condition. The lid closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock, the latter stamped ‘Bramah London’, the oldest lock making company in the world with a history well worthy of a read via Google. Sadly the key has long gone but I understand replacements can still be obtained from the Bramah company. The box has been neatly relined and is free of tears and stains. More than likely the box was made to accommodate 4 glass decanters and possibly one glass. As it stands it now lends itself to a wide range of use and given the style it would display well in any setting. Recommended.
