Victorian Solid Mahogany Brass Bound Unisex Jewellery Box c.1850

Attractive and very practical Victorian jewellery box equally suitable for use by a lady or gentleman. This box was built to last. Constructed with solid mahogany throughout. Three inlaid brass corner pieces to each of the four edges to provide support and protection. Robust inset top handle with screw fixings. All inlays are in excellent condition….all firmly fixed. No shrinkage splits. No missing or replaced wood to the exterior. The lid closes perfectly square. Original brass stop hinges. Original lock. Key for decorative purposes only. I believe that the box would have originally contained various accessories for a gentleman…shaving equipment….a few jars etc. The interior has been sympathetically refitted throughout picking up on the original ‘v’ cuts for the dividers that runs from the back to the front of two pieces of wood to the left and right of the box. All of the dividers throughout can be simply removed and replaced to suit varying storage requirements. The base of the section to the left can be removed to access a ‘secret’ storage area or to use as a full box depth storage area. The lid interior and base of the box interior has been lined. All other surfaces (all solid mahogany) have been nicely stained and lacquered. The jewellery shown is not included in the sale and are shown purely to give a rough idea of suitability of use by a gentleman. A well built box that should last and last that displays well and is very flexible in terms of storage requirements.
