Description
A set of five mahogany carver chairs by Alan Grainger, known as “Acornman”, dating from the 1960s. Suitable for use as a dining set, the chairs have horizontally straight top rails, shaped arms, and removable drop-in red leather seats. Each chair features the carved acorn motif to the top of each leg, the recognised trademark of Acorn Industries. Alan Grainger and his father, Alan Grainger Senior, established Acorn Industries in 1958 in the Yorkshire village of Brandsby. Working within the Arts and Crafts tradition, the firm shows clear influence from Robert “Mouseman” Thompson, with whom Alan Grainger Senior completed his apprenticeship. Grainger became one of a group of Yorkshire craftsmen identifiable by their individual carved trademarks, now commonly referred to as the Yorkshire critters. Acorn Industries continued production until 2005, when the business closed following the retirement of the last family member.
