Although you might think that a dining chair is a relatively simple and uninspiring type of chair, you would be wrong. Instead, the humble dining chair is a seat that has evolved over 400 years incorporating countless tiny innovations to bring you an item that is light, strong and comfortable. The first chairs we would recognise as dining chairs emerged during the middle of the 17th Century and prior to this everyone except for the head of the household would sit on simple solid wood stools around the table.
As eating etiquette took off in the 18th Century the Mahogany dining chair was further refined and simplified with padding, upholstery, elegant splat backs, hidden blocks on the joints for strength and fine tapered or carved legs. During the 19th Century as adjustments were made in the form to better suit our sitting posture and ensure the dining chair was strong yet light and easy to move around. As the 20th Century progressed the form of a dining chair was turned entirely on its head as new materials including steel tubing and plastics allowed us to fundamentally change the form of a chair. Of course old staples such as Oak continued to be used as well.
