Description
A substantial early 20th century mahogany bureau bookcase by the renowned Edinburgh cabinetmakers Whytock & Reid, bearing the firm’s stamped maker’s mark. The upper section is fitted with a pair of shaped glazed doors opening to an adjustable shelved interior. Below is a fall-front bureau opening to a fitted arrangement of pigeonholes, small drawers and compartments. The lower section contains a useful arrangement of drawers with figured mahogany fronts and brass drop handles, all standing on bracket feet with a shaped apron. A very attractive and practical piece of Scottish furniture, combining bookcase, display cabinet, writing desk and storage in one. Whytock & Reid were one of Scotland’s best-known cabinetmaking firms and produced high-quality furniture throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There is also an old clear plastic drawer protector/liner fitted to some of the drawer interiors. This appears to be removable and can be peeled away. Overall, the piece would benefit from only very minor sympathetic restoration or tidying, rather than any major work. It remains an impressive, usable and highly presentable piece of furniture. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description. Maker: Whytock & Reid, Edinburgh Date: Circa 1920 Material: Mahogany with figured mahogany veneers Origin: Scotland
