Description
Size: Platemark 47 x 38.5 cm, margins appx 1 inch. Condition: Good clean impression on wove paper, some short repaired tears to margins. Marriage A-La-Mode was a grand scheme devised by Hogarth, which commenced with his paintings of the six scenes, representing "a Variety of Modern Occurrences in High-Life". The paintings are now in the National Gallery in London. They were complete in 1743, and as early as that Hogarth was advertising the prints, to be engraved by the best masters in Paris. Although Hogarth was himself an engraver, he travelled to Paris in May 1743, partly to secure the services of the French engravers, including Bernard Baron, who engraved this print. This plate, the third plate of the series, is set in the house, or "Museum" of Dr Misaubin in Westminster. Dr Misaubin himself is standing near a skull which shows the effects of the disease which is no doubt a topic of the conversation. The young girl to the husband right is the husband's mistress, applying some ointment to a sore on her lips, while the woman between the husband and doctor is the procuress. For a commentary on the wealth of detail in this sordid scene, see Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works, 1989, pages 117-118 (Paulson 159). This print is from the 1835-1837 edition published by Baldwin Cradock & Joy. After this edition Hogarth's plates were dispersed and some badly altered, so this is the last edition to be reliably the artist's work Unframed, will be sent flat.
