William Hogarth had painted a two sets of similar scenes to this in oils for clients before he conceived the idea of engraving this version and publishing it as a print. The humorous point is summed up in the page of the book which has fallen on the floor in the second scene - "Omne animal post coitum triste", Every creature is dejected after coition. In the first print the man (who is considered to be a portrait of the judge Sir John Willes) entreats the lady, his wig awry. Cupid lights a rocket in the picture on the wall, and the lady's dog jumps up excitedly. In the sequel, the woman entreats the man, who looks completely exhausted. The dog is asleep, the room is a wreck and a new picture can be seen of Cupid's rocket having fallen to the ground. These prints are an early 19th century issue, with the hand colour added later, probably 20th century. The original Hogarth plates were lightly restored by Jame Heath in about 1822, but there are no significant changes to this copy from the original issued in 1736 by Hogarth. The prints are listed as number 141 and 142 by Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works, 1989. Copies of these prints tend to be quite rare: because of their racy nature, they were not printed and issued as often as most Hogarth prints in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Jane Hogarth and John Boydell did not include them in their published folios. For Baldwin Cradock & Joy folios, they were hidden in a pocket at the back of the book. As a result they were often mislaid or damaged beyond repair if a book suffered from damp
