Description
A charming William IV rosewood tea caddy, dating from the early 19th century, beautifully decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay. The rectangular body displays attractive rosewood figuring, with fine mother-of-pearl stringing and circular inlaid details to the front. The shaped, raised lid is embellished with delicate mother-of-pearl foliate motifs and a carved gadrooned border. The front retains its diamond-shaped mother-of-pearl escutcheon, whilst the sides are fitted with decorative ring carrying handles. The hinged lid opens to reveal two internal tea compartments, each with a removable wooden cover, originally intended for storing different varieties of tea. Raised on small bun feet, this delightful caddy has a lovely warm colour and patina, with the decorative inlay providing an attractive contrast to the richly figured rosewood. Circa 1835
