Description
A very lively and colourful aquatint of Venice, Italy, by William Monk. A popular subject, but quite an unusual view, with the gondola posts marching diagonally across the page! But it gives an effective perspective to the scene. Monk was active in early 1900s. Signed by the artist lower right and also on the plate. William Monk RE (1863-1937) was a British etcher, wood engraver and painter in oils and watercolours. He studied at the Chester School of Art and in Belgium. He was a member of the royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and examples of his work are held at British Museum, the V & A and the Imperial War Museum.
