This image is very widely reproduced and praised, but this copy is a first edition print from the original 1898 publication of London Types. Nicholson's original prints for this series were 13 woodblock prints (created in 1898 in a small edition), and then the main 1898 publication was in lithograph. Verses to accompany the prints were provided by W E Henley. The frame is made from period oak moulding of about the same date as the print. Nicholson (1872-1949) was one of a handful of artists at the end of the 19th century (his contemporary Aubrey Beardsley is another example) who revolutionised the popular art aesthetic. Nicholson's images ushered in the poster style which became fully established by the 1920's. Nicholson's iconic illustrations for Heinemann were part of his early work which he did with his brother-in-law James Pryde under the name J & W Beggarstaff. He went on to become a painter and theatre designer, and was knighted in 1936.
