Description
This small bust length portrait of an unknown Gentleman is painted by the Irish Artist Adam Buck and is executed in both watercolour and pencil on paper and is both signed and dated for 1821 at the bottom of the portrait. The portrait is executed with a wonderful use of gentle pink and peach skin tones against which the bright silver painting of his spectacles contrasts wonderfully. The painting sits in a later stained wooden frame which I imagine would date to the middle of the last century and has on the reverse of it pasted a typed biog (likely from the portrait's last owner) of Buck as well as an absolutely charming piece from Country Life 1957 about Adam Buck and the portraits he painted of Mrs Sarah George. Adam Buck - Adam Buck was born in Cork in Ireland in 1859 the son of a silversmith where he became an accomplished miniaturist. In 1795 he moved to London where he enjoyed success both socially and artistically, carrying favour with both The Prince of Wales and The Duke of York, and he started to produce small watercolours of the aristocracy and the fashionable as well as his miniatures. His popularity waned after he became associated with Mary Anne Clark and the scandal in 1809 when she testified against her ex-lover The Duke of York in Parliament over taking payments for those seeking commissions in the Army whilst the Duke was Commander of Chief. This did not please the Moralists indeed I read that even Doctors has become somewhat annoyed with him as so many young women in wanting to emulate the beauty and the fashion of the Scantily Clad Mary Anne Clark in wearing light muslin dresses were experiencing an increasing number of cold like ailments . He died suddenly in 1833 leaving a wife and three children. But in his life he was also a passionate lover of the Antique especially from Greece and Rome which inspired a life long project recording images of Greek Vases.

declaration
The Three MusCATeers has clarified that the Wonderful Gentle Portrait by Adam Buck of Unknown Gentleman with His Silver Spectacles Signed & Dated 1821 (LA466881) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1821
condition
The portrait is in very good condition the colours are still strong and bright. There is a small light foxing mark just above the far side of his forehead. The frame and mount as I have mentioned are of a later date possibly mid 1900s. There is a small black mark on the mount on the same side as the portrait below which is a very light water mark stain. The frame is strong but I would say the wire of hanging it has some age to it and looks like it could be unraveling slightly so I would check or replace before hanging.
