Description
Step back in time, the date is 1910, world war 1 is less than 4 years off, and this Barkers Patent compass has been built ready for action, might have even seen action in WW2, who knows. To touch an item that was probably cherished and cared for by soldier from 1910 onwards, making this a very special collectors piece. The Barkers compass is made of brass and has a black anodised top surface, maybe to limit any reflection and not get pin point as a target. Flip it open and you have a inner black lid with a hairline guide to the centre and flip eye sight guide just above the hinged lanyard ring. A white numbered dial, black centre with a bold brass arrow. A bezel lock to the right hand side and a dial lock for transport. The inside is marked with the number 1600, maybe the model number or quantity number. On the base is the name 'Barkers Patent' and below this the patent number 29677 and date 1908. The outer ring is engraved with north, east south and west with degrees in between. Look at the lid and just above the two brass screws you will find the initials M. S. X. Also hand written on the inside of the leather case flap, is the regiment, Essex 3/7 Worcester Reg't. Made by British Company founded in London by Francis Barker (1820 - Dec. 15, 1875) in 1846. All in all, a very nice bit of WW1 militaria. Material: Brass & Leather Approximate Dimensions of compass only (case extra): 2.5cm high 8.5cm wide 6cm deep
