A First World War period Naval ditty box owned by R.W Donaldson (F. 30696), born 15 May 1883, Air Mechanic 1st Class complete with the owner's boxed and named British War and Victory medals, the box's interior shelf hand painted by the owner with naive naval and royal insignia, depiction of the HMS Shearwater, 1906, crossed swords and weaponry etc, also complete with a portrait photograph of the owner with Shearwater cap and articles of his everyday life at sea to include knives, a tobacco tin accommodating brass uniform buttons, cased anti-flair goggles, cased razor and hone, sewing equipment and hand written correspondence to include notices of death of Donaldson's relatives, correspondence with American Masonic lodges, etc. Sold alongside copies of National Archive records relating to Donaldson's life, career and the ships he served in.
