Edwardian chest of drawers reflect a shift in taste at the beginning of the 20th century. Produced during and just beyond the reign of Edward VII (1901–1910), they differ noticeably from the weight and ornament of high Victorian furniture. Where Victorian chests of drawers can feel solid and imposing, Edwardian pieces are generally lighter in proportion, more refined in detail, and influenced by a revival of 18th-century design.
Materials and Style
Mahogany remained widely used, though often selected for a brighter tone and finer figure. Satinwood and other lighter timbers became fashionable, particularly in revival styles influenced by Sheraton and Hepplewhite. Inlay, cross-banding, and stringing were common features, adding elegance without heavy carving.
Oak also appears in Edwardian furniture, particularly in pieces influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, where the emphasis returned to visible grain and honest construction rather than applied ornament.
Construction and Craftsmanship
By the Edwardian period, machinery played a larger role in production, resulting in more uniform dovetails and smoother internal finishes. However, quality Edwardian chest of drawers were still built using traditional framing methods, with solid drawer fronts and well-fitted interiors.
Proportion was carefully considered. Drawers were often slightly shallower, legs more slender, and decoration more restrained than Victorian examples. The overall effect is refined rather than imposing.
Influence and Makers
The period saw continued influence from earlier designers such as Thomas Sheraton, whose light, elegant forms were widely revived. Established firms such as Gillows continued operating into the early 20th century, while Arts and Crafts makers, including Robert “Mouseman” Thompson slightly later, reinforced the importance of traditional craftsmanship.
Edwardian chest of drawers remain popular for their versatility, offering period character with lighter styling that suits both traditional and modern interiors.
