Nothing says timeless quality better than a set of antique Mahogany Chest of Drawers. From beautifully proportioned Georgian Chest on chests, to small Mahogany chest of drawers, this exotic red wood was always reserved for the best pieces. Because supplies of the timber began to run out even in the 18th Century most Mahogany chests are actually a clever combination of solid and veneered timber. This saved costs and also allowed the more precious flame and fiddleback grain effects to be utilised to the full. Over time it is common for the underlying wood of these chests (usually Pine) to shrink at a different rate to the Mahogany veneer causing cracks. It is therefore very common for antique Mahogany chests to have had restoration. Internally the best chests had oak lined drawers for smoothness and since Mahogany has a tight grain, it was usually finished in a deep French polish. Of course, whether you prefer the pressed and cast brass handles of the Georgians, or the chunky knobs of the later Victorian period, you will be sure that your antique Mahogany chest is full of unique character as well as solid craftsmanship.
