A Georgian chest of drawers is one of the most refined forms of 18th-century British furniture. Made between 1714 and 1830, these pieces reflect a period defined by classical influence, expanding trade, and a focus on proportion and balance. Compared with earlier walnut furniture and later Victorian weight, Georgian design is notably restrained and harmonious.
Materials and Craftsmanship
Mahogany became the principal timber from the 1720s onwards, valued for its strength, stability, and rich colour. Earlier examples may feature walnut, while oak or pine was often used internally. The depth of tone and natural patina found on Georgian mahogany is difficult to replicate and remains a key sign of authenticity.
Construction was entirely hand-crafted. Hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon framing, and solid drawer linings are typical features. Graduated drawers and bracket or ogee feet were carefully proportioned to create visual balance. Decoration was generally understated, influenced by classical symmetry rather than heavy carving.
Designers and Influence
Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton shaped the design language of the period through published patterns and workshop practice. While signed pieces are rare, their influence is evident in the elegant lines and measured detail of many Georgian chests.
Today, Georgian chest of drawers remain highly regarded for their craftsmanship, quality timber, and enduring proportions, offering both practical use and genuine period character.
