Mahogany has been used for good quality furniture since the mid-18th Century not just for English Desks but also European desks as well. There is something pleasing about this deep red wood which complements its shiny cast brass handles, gilt tooled leather tops and an impressive sense of poise. While smaller sized Kneehole desks , Ladies Desks and Davenports can be found, it is the impressive Partners desks and Library desks where the material really excels. Such 19th Century desks remind us of long-departed Architects, Engineers and Captains of Industry working intently, as well as refined ladies penning quick notes to send to their friends.
