As a plentiful and strong timber Oak has long been used for making desks. Its long grain means it tends not to warp leaving the top nice and flat and the drawers opening and closing smoothly. Indeed, even many of the best desks covered in exotic timbers such as Mahogany and Rosewood were still constructed and lined with oak for these very reasons. When choosing an Antique or Vintage oak desk then there is thankfully lots of choice for you. Carved or beautifully patinated examples from the 18th or 19th Centuries are of course firm favourites for the smaller Cottage look, and Oak Knee Hole desks also give a sense of honesty and charm. For the Industrial look then Oak Pedestal desks or Roll Top desks are ideal and have bags of space for all your paperwork and writing implements. By the early 1900s simple unashamed School desks and Arts and Craft designs had done away with the fancy excesses of the past and this admirable simplicity was to continue throughout the 20th Century. These Vintage Oak desks suit our modern lives well.
