During the 19th Century the Victorians continued to embody the high status and symbolism of desks which Georgian desks had begun. A smart desk denoted success at Industry so grand Partners desks, pedestal desks and Library desks in Mahogany, Rosewood and Satinwood continued to be produced, as did Davenports, Writing Desks and Escritoire’s for domestic use. By the 1870s Victorian Society was undergoing sweeping reforms of the workplace and new shapes removed much of the design clutter and partitions of earlier desks to improve the air and physical space around the desk for workers. Roll-top desks which kept everything tidy and secure were invented in America and tiny cubby holes were replaced by more practical deeper drawers. When looking to purchase a Victorian Desk there is plenty of choice for you, but it is good to remember that most of these desks were very well made to reflect the importance of business in the growing British Empire.
At LoveAntiques we have a large selection of quality Victorian Desks for sale as well as later vintage examples that pay homage to the classic 19th Century designs.
