"Kemp Town Mews in Brighton has a history rooted in the development of the grand Kemp Town Estate. Originally built as stables and laundry facilities for the grand houses of the estate. After its use as stables, the mews was partially repurposed as factory premises. The Rayner Optical Company leased the property in 1918 to establish its optical workshop."
At some point in around 1920 riding school was established at this location with unknown closing date.
For a while there were two telephone companies, which may explain the reason for two numbers. Kemp Town telephone numbers in the 400 range were introduced as early as the 1880s, so the company could have been established quite early. According to the telephone numbers "Kemp Town 7157" sign dates to be from definitely before 1950s
"After automation in 1927, area of Brighton had a linked numbering system, unique in the UK – in which exchange names were enamelled onto the telephone dial. Brighton, Hove, Preston, Portslade, Rottingdean and Southwick subscribers first dialled the name of the exchange they wanted like in this case "Kemp Town" followed by its four-digit number. The system was retained until February 1950."
"Hacks & Hunters" also called hunter hack, is an English pleasure show class where the riders perform on the flat at a walk, trot, canter and hand gallop, and then jump two low fences. Scoring is based on the horse and riders' manners, gait, and conformation and their ability to jump the fences cleanly.
