19th century antique oil painting - portrait of a French woman - Madelaine Verlin A striking and captivating oil on canvas 19th century portrait showing a noble country woman, identified verso as Madelaine Verlin.  The artist has cleverly brought the character of this woman to life by painting her in close up, creating a strong presence and making her features even more dominant.  It is an imposing vision of a strong and beautiful woman. There is a glimpse into her history on the reverse of the painting, with an inscription which reads ' Madelaine Verlin, wife of Jean George Hubersseville to Nicolas Jacquemin' Indicating that the painting may have been left to Nicolas Jacquemin. 19th century, France. The paintwork is fragile and has light cracks throughout, with a more substantial crack along the left-hand side of the painting, there are no rips or repairs.  The frame is later, but has acquired a good, aged colour over time.
