As any art lover knows, Portrait paintings are far more than just mirrors to another person’s physical appearance. Through the use of oils, watercolours and more these pieces offer a glimpse to the sitter’s soul as well as the fashions and symbolism of their time. Long before photography portrait painting was the only way to let people know how you looked and marriages were agreed based off of such pictures. They were the only way to capture a possibly happy moment in time to ruminate on in later life and the only way to recall someone after they had died. With the advent of Photography during the middle of the 19th Century accurate painted representations became less important so artists began to explore more impressionistic and abstract approaches instead. This view continued through the 20th Century to today.
Antique and Vintage portrait paintings offer a wonderful way to engage with the past through a direct connection with another person. Apart from more formal pieces intended for public display (as often found in 19th Century works), many instead are full of softness and openness which bring out the blemishes, insecurities, and longings which all of us are subject to.
At LoveAntiques we have a fine selection of Antique and Vintage Portraits for all your needs.
