Description
Description A fantastic late 19th-century engraved wine goblet, dating to circa 1880–1890. It has an octagonal panelled bowl with a solid basal section enclosing a beautiful central air tear. The panels are finely engraved with a continuous rural scene depicting a windmill, farm and church within a wooded landscape, with the date “1792” engraved to one panel. The stem features two large hollow swelling knops, leading down to a high conical folded foot. A striking and decorative Continental piece, the engraved date almost certainly reflecting a narrative or earlier reference rather than the period of manufacture. Historical Context The date “1792” is unlikely to be random, but it does not relate to any significant event in Bohemia. It is more likely to represent a specific local or personal reference, such as the construction date of the house or mill depicted, or a family or estate association. It may also derive from an earlier engraved design, as Continental engravers frequently reused established patterns, including dates. By the late 19th century, the inclusion of a precise date such as 1792 helped lend a greater sense of age and authenticity than a more generic date. While 1792 is widely associated with the French Revolution, there is no visual evidence here to suggest any political or historical intent. In summary, the date is most likely tied to the scene itself or inherited from an earlier source, rather than commemorating a broader historical event. Date & Origin Bohemia, c1880-1900, Period of Queen Victoria. Condition Excellent. No chips, cracks or restoration. Dimensions Height: 17cm Rim diameter: 7cm Foot diameter: 8.9cm
