Description
Claude Thomas Stanfield Moore (1853–1901) Shipwreck Beneath Dunstanburgh Castle, 1876 Oil on board Description A powerful Victorian marine drama by Claude Thomas Stanfield Moore, Shipwreck Beneath Dunstanburgh Castle (1876) captures the tragic wreck of a three-masted sailing ship dashed against the rocks of Northumberland’s coast. In the foreground, the broken hull lies shattered, its torn sails collapsing into the surf, while sailors in lifeboats struggle desperately against crashing waves. Above them, seabirds circle in restless arcs. Towering in the distance, the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle rise in stark silhouette, silent witness to the human tragedy below. This evocative seascape is not only a narrative of disaster but a Romantic allegory: the shipwreck symbolizing human fragility, the storm embodying nature’s power, and the castle representing the permanence of history. Composition & Technique Composition: The eye is drawn from the jagged rocks and foaming breakers of the foreground to the drama of the sailors at sea, and finally upward to the castle looming on the cliffs. Brushwork: Sweeping, expressive strokes animate the storm, balanced by precise detail in rigging, rocks, and castle architecture. Palette: Deep greens, storm greys, and steel blues dominate, relieved by ochres and siennas in the wreckage, with shafts of golden light piercing the clouds. Moore’s handling of atmosphere reflects Turner’s influence, while his precise nautical detail recalls Clarkson Stanfield. The result is a work that transcends literal description to become a Romantic meditation on tragedy and endurance. Signature Lower right: C.T. Moore 1876 The Artist Claude Thomas Stanfield Moore (1853–1901) was a distinguished British painter known for shipwrecks, storms, and coastal landscapes. Exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution. Combined Turner’s atmospheric brilliance with Stanfield’s technical accuracy. His career, though cut short at age 48, left behind highly prized works — auction results reaching $40,000+ USD. Frame Presented in a Larson Juhl gold-leaf “Venice” moulding with domed profile and AR70 museum-grade glass. Dimensions: Frame: 44 × 27 × 3 cm Dunstanburgh Castle – Symbolism Built in 1313 by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, Dunstanburgh Castle played a key role in England’s northern defenses and later became a Lancastrian stronghold during the Wars of the Roses. Falling into ruin by the 16th century, it was rediscovered by Romantic artists like Turner and Girtin. In Moore’s composition, the castle represents permanence, looming above the fleeting human struggle in the storm. Provenance Signed, dated, and titled by the artist, 1876 Originally acquired by a private British collector Later appeared at a northern shire auction Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD and shown at the Famous Lord Hill Museum Market & Value A museum-quality example of Moore’s dramatic shipwreck scenes. with potential for stronger results among collectors of Northumberland and Victorian maritime works.
