Description
A late 19th century watercolour, possibly (according to local auctioneers) of Newminster Abbey, near Morpeth, Northumberland. The Cistercian abbey was founded in 1137, burned down by Scottish raiders in 1159 and then rebuilt in 1180. Saint Robert of Newminster was its first abbot. The ruins of the abbey are privately owned and not open to the public. Unfortunately, the painting is unsigned.
